Bideford shopping centre has applied for extension of time for plans to almost double in size.

A shopping centre in Bideford has resubmitted plans to almost double in size with a major new extension.

Atlantic Village’s current planning permission for the £11million development was due to expire next month.

The original proposals for the site off Clovelly Road were approved by Torridge District Council in October 2011.

But the final go-ahead was only given in August 2012 following the agreement of a package of financial proposals.

Andrew Pegg, of applicants Drake Bideford Ltd, said: “This is part of our ongoing commitment to Atlantic Village and the surrounding area in Bideford.

“We are committed to Bideford’s future and this application is an important part of that.”

The new application seeks the approval of the exact same plans approved three years ago.

It includes a 5,405sqm retail sales area, 385 new car parking spaces, coach and bus parking, and the provision of around 90 jobs during construction and 120 ‘ongoing’ jobs.

On the opposite side of Clovelly Road, groundworks are still ongoing at Atlantic Park. The infrastructure work is set to finish this month before the 12-week construction of a McDonalds restaurant begins.
