The zoo is nominated for a Small Award, and will find out if they have won at a special ceremony in London.

Exmoor Zoo has been nominated for a national award celebrating small businesses.

The zoo, owned by Danny and Lynn Reynolds, has been shortlisted for a Small Awards in association with Facebook for best family business.

They will find out if they have been victorious on May 25, at a special ceremony in London hosted by former Great British Bake Off presenter Sue Perkins.

"We know we have a different approach to a 'zoo' and hope that all visitors go away having learnt and retained at least one new fact," Lynn said.

"Education is a key part of our business and we offer personal talks and handling sessions throughout the day.

"Both Danny and I are active within the zoo, Danny on the animal husbandry side and myself on the commercial side. We are very much part of the daily running of the zoo."

The zoo opened in 1993 and has been recognised for its unique characteristics, challenges and strengths for a small family business.

It has grown from just two staff and 10,000 visitors to 24 staff and 46,000 visitors.

This year's Small Awards ceremony will be the first, with the awards aiming to 'recognise the achievements of small businesses'.

The judges for this year's Small Awards include the former Business Secretary Sir Vince Cable.
