NORTH Devon watersports organisations are set to benefit from a European project aimed at boosting the sector and its economic impact. The Nautisme Espace Atlantique programme covers 23 European regions working together to promote and develop the marine leisure sector along the Atlantic coast.North Devon+ is co-ordinating the programme, which will help raise awareness of the region as a holiday destination.Recent research has shown that surfing alone is worth more than £50 million to the North Devon economy.Isabelle Bromham, the coastal watersports project officer, appealed for businesses involved in watersports to get in touch and take part in the project. There was an opportunity for North Devon to be represented at the Atlantic Watersports Games in Portugal this year, providing sufficient funding was forthcoming.Martin Wickham, general manager of North Devon+, said: "For a long time now it has been obvious that watersports, and in particular surfing, are an important contributor to the economy of North Devon."This project will assist the development of this sector and ensure that the opportunities that this natural strength affords are maximised."Businesses which want to find out more should contact Isabelle Bromham on (01237) 426420m or Sophie on (01837) 658643.
