This year’s carnival takes place on September 16.

Organisers of Barnstaple Carnival are planning to make this year's event as big as last year's bumper celebration - and there's still time to get involved.

Entries are still open to join the main procession and children's procession, which will be parading around the town on Saturday, September 16.

There are cash prizes of up to £100 for the best floats in five of the seven main procession classes, and trophies and certificates for all the winners.

Barnstaple Carnival Committee chairman John White said: "At the moment we've got 40 entries and there are always lots more that come in during the final weeks.

"We had 54 entries last year, and I hope we'll equal that and have another all-singing, all-dancing carnival."

The carnival celebrated its 70th consecutive year last time out.

This year's main procession will start from The Strand at 6pm.

Preceding the procession will be the crowning of this year's carnival queen, 13-year-old Kimberley Jump, who will be attended by princesses Brooke Woolacott and Alexandra Pinto.

The list of classes are as follows:

Class one: Junior organisations (majority of participants must be under the age of 16 and must include a vehicle)

Class two: Charitable organisations (for registered charities only and must include a vehicle)

Class three: Floats, vehicles, other (Entrants welcome from groups and individuals and must be on or carrying a 'vehicle').

Class four: Carnival royalty

Class five: Trade entries
