Chulmleighs retiring town crier Eileen Dolling and new crier Ben Farlam will be ringing in the start of Chulmleighs 763rd Old Fair on Tuesday night.Eileen, who has served as town crier for 21 years, will be on duty at the fair, which starts with the crowning of fair queen Ellie Pincombe, from 6.30pm. Chulmleigh Academy pupil Ellie will be attended by Hannah and Mollie Andrews; crown bearer Aoife Ford; herald Archie Sharples; and flower girl Grace Andrews. This years fair, held every year since 1253, will be opened by Sam Moyse, landlord of the Old Courthouse; the crowning of the fair queen will be carried out by wife Paddy. The traditional money scramble and childrens races along Fore Street will follow the crowning ceremony outside the town hall. There are plenty of events are planned throughout the week, culminating with 15th century living history battles at the Leigh Road playing fields from 10am on Sunday, July 31. There will also be an inter-town 20/20 cricket match from 1pm at the cricket ground to enter a team, contact Dave Gidney. Before then, events include a country fair on Wednesday; sports day on Thursday; horse show and gymkhana on Friday; and a fancy dress parade on Saturday.
