A record number of people have received their Pride in Ilfracombe Awards for their dedication and efforts on behalf of the town.A packed audience at the Ilfracombe Centre watched as the Mayor, Councillor Geoff Fowler, presented 10 worthy winners with their certificates, in the first 2009 batch of the town council's popular award scheme.The first married couple ever to win a joint award, David and June Williams of St James Dairy, won the Service to Neighbourhood for their work on the harbour lights and fostering community spirit.Winner of the Act of Kindness category was Pam Norman for her voluntary work over the last 30 years delivering meals on wheels, driving the community bus and working for the Blind Club.John Waran, who raises awareness of "grot spots" and works to clean them up, was winner of the Helping our Environment category.Margaret Shorney, plus daughters Emma and Katrina, were recognised for their Services to Youth especially in relation to committee work, fund raising and youth nights at the Vision Centre at Slade.For his years of dedicated service to the RNLI in Ilfracombe, helping others in distress, Andrew Bengey won the Act of Courage category.Bicclescombe Park park-keeper Alan Hewitt was recognised for his Length of Service and the wonderful job he performs in looking after the park.Unable to pick up their awards from the last ceremony were the Rev Preb Nigel Jackson-Stevens who, until his retirement, had been vicar of Trinity Church for 25 years and a ceaseless promoter of the town.Winnie Gambold was awarded Act of Courage for refusing to be cowed by a young would-be robber, seeing him out of the shop with a piece of her mind rather than the contents of the till!Ilfracombe and District Credit Union and North Devon Voluntary Service in the town both received awards for their support of so many.
