A renowned fugitive returned to Combe Martin over theBank Holiday weekend, ducking and diving to escape his pursuers as the village held its annual Hunting of the Earl of Rone.

The colourful event saw costumed characters take to the streets in a series of parades from Friday to Monday, seeking the elusive Earl during a unique tradition born of myth, local legend and history.

There was a grand finale on Monday evening as the apprehended Earl, his escort of grenadiers, plus costumed characters including the Hobby Horse, Fool, drummers, musicians and countless costumed revellers made their way down the long village street to the sea.

The climax of the event is a grand spectacle which sees an effigy of the Earl cast into the sea accompanied by a cacophony of drumming. The full story of the Earl of Rone can be found at www.earl-of-rone.org.uk.
