POLICE are investigating the theft of a five feet tall brass lectern from Bishops Tawton Baptist Church. The lectern, which is shaped like an eagle with open wings, went missing on Saturday between 11am and 2.30pm.Because of its size and weight, it is believed that it could have taken two people to carry it out and that a vehicle was used to take it away. Neighbourhood Beat Manager, PC Glyn Clark, said: "I am shocked and appalled at the gall of this crime, but I believe that this strong, community-minded, village will have residents willing to come forward to assist us in our enquiries. I would appeal to the offender to hand this item back, as it is priceless to the community and means a terrific amount to the church family. I will be liasing with all the local scrap merchants and making them aware of this callous crime and that this unique church item has been stolen. "I encourage members of the community to report any suspicious activities witnessed in the area at the time of the offence to the investigating officer PC Malcolm Kirk, or to myself or PCSO Hannah Denton." Police can be contacted on 08452 777 444 or via the confidential Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111, quoting crime reference number CB/08/2472.
