The 40-year-old stole items to fund methadone as she wanted to get off heroin, North Devon Magistrates’ Court heard.

A drug addict stole sunglasses, lingerie, perfume and a watch from a store to fund drugs.

Emma Scott, 40, of Alpha House, Ilfracombe, stole the goods worth £182.89 from TK Maxx in Barnstaple on April 20.

Scott appeared at North Devon Magistrates' Court on Friday and pleaded guilty to the charge.

She was caught on CCTV and when arrested told police she was 'really struggling'.

Magistrates heard she was awaiting treatment at RISE for heroin addiction, but due to short-staffing had not received her prescription.

She sold the items to fund methadone as she did not want to wait to start her treatment.

Scott stole the items while on a suspended sentence order from Exeter Crown Court.

Magistrates committed the matter back to the crown court for sentencing on June 9.
