SIR - It is good to note that Cynthia Snowden (Yours Sincerely, January 9) has a Highway Code to consult; less good to realise that her copy is out of date! Regrettably, even though the Highway Code is one of the top selling books, less than one per cent of road users have a copy and many fewer a current copy. In the 2007 edition of the Highway Code, merging in turn is indexed on page 140 to rule number 134In these times of fast-changing traffic conditions it is important that all road users, not just motorists, have up-to-date information and skills. Too many lives are lost on our Devon roads because people fail to adapt to changing situations.Probably the best way of drivers and motorcyclists protecting their own lives is to take part in one of the Better Driving courses run by organisations such as RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders and the Institute of Advanced Motorists. These courses help motorists of all ages and ability achieve high levels of safe efficient and economical progress. In most cases cheaper motoring too!A new RoSPA Course starts at the North Devon College on Tuesday, 26 February.
