AT the age of 97, Dorothy Shaw is the oldest resident of one of Barnstaple's newest buildings. But since moving into a self-contained private apartment in McCarthy & Stone's Port Mill Court, retirement development at Rolle Quay, last July, Dorothy says she's never had so much attention in her life! With a communal lounge for coffee mornings and other activities, a shared laundry room, a landscaped garden and a guest suite, Port Mill Court is a community in its own right.Dorothy said: "I am not very mobile but I manage all right at Port Mill Court."I had been living in a bungalow on the outskirts of Barnstaple for 30 years but as I got older, I found there were fewer and fewer people to talk to and I could go for days without seeing anyone. "I've outlived my own generation and some of the next!"I'm so glad I made the change and came here. I needed to be somewhere with people. The other residents are very friendly and helpful and we are all good friends."Age Concern take me shopping once a week and I have a cleaner to do my flat, which doesn't take long. It's much easier than being in my bungalow, which was far too big for me living on my own."Dorothy's grandson Graham and his wife Helen have also benefited from Dorothy's move to Port Mill Court. She said: "They are much happier now because they know I'm alright."They live 250 miles away in Milton Keynes, so obviously they can't come down here all the time. It was my grandson who looked after the business side of things when I moved here and his wife initially found the development on the Internet."As soon as I saw this apartment, I knew I wanted it. It is light and airy and the bedroom is nice and spacious. I love the being on the ground floor with a patio."Each apartment at Port Mill Court is connected to a 24-hour Careline system, as well as to TV camera security at the main entrance. There is also a lift to all floors.Well over half the apartments have been sold and those remaining are priced from £174,450.For further information or to arrange a viewing of Port Mill Court, call the sales office on 01271 321250.
