Last year, Teresa Crossman, creator of the private enterprise North Devon Flag, came up with the idea of holding a North Devon Day to celebrate the history, culture and beauty of the region and to raise funds for North Devon Hospice.Gerard Fawcitt of the hospice fund-raising team said 20 individuals and groups organised events and raised more than 5,000 for the hospice, which was a great achievement. This year, North Devon Day is on Saturday, May 23 and already a number of groups have offered to organise a fundraising event in aid of the hospice on that day." One of these is Christ Church Short Mat Bowling Club in Bear Street, Barnstaple, which is organising a 24-hour short mat bowling marathon, from 6pm on Friday, May 22. Everyone is welcome to go along on the Saturday morning to encourage the bowlers. You can buy refreshments, browse stalls and, if you wish, make a donation to North Devon Hospice. DevotedHilary Iley, a member of the bowling club, said: "Like many people, I have the highest regard for the hospice. My husband died in the care of the hospice in 2006."We were so touched by the level of care and attention that my husband and I received. The staff and volunteers are so devoted. As a local charity, it is a wonderful cause to raise money for."Gerard Fawcitt said: "The really great thing about North Devon Day is that everyone can do something. "It could be a simple cream tea, a car wash, an open garden, a barbecue or anything else that you enjoy and can invite your friends to come along and support. "We are hoping that everyone will join in. I am sure there will be plenty of other ideas that you can come up with among friends and family, and support our hospice. We can only raise funds in North Devon and we support more than 80 local people every day. So you can help us to make a difference at the same time as having a great time with friends and family."Teresa Crossman has again agreed to give the organisers of each event a North Devon Flag to display on the day. "We can also create posters for you to promote your event and help in any way we can," Gerard said. To let everyone know you are organising an event, you can fill out the form below and send it to the fund-raising team at North Devon Hospice.
