PATIENTS at a Bideford health centre can now make their own important health checks while they wait to be seen by their doctor. The waiting room at Bideford Medical Centre now boasts a brand new Patient Health Promotion Area designed to help waiting patients to reduce their risks of heart attacks, strokes, cancers and other devastating illnesses.GPs at the centre on Abbotsham Road have set up blood pressure, weight and body mass indices monitors, as well as a large screen television that shows a continuous slide presentation on a range of health issues from lowering cholesterol to keeping warm this winter. And to promote the launch of the new service earlier this month, patients were also given free advice by a visiting smoking advisor and dietician. The centre's Dr Antonia Lidder said there was a lot to be said for the old adage 'prevention is better than cure'."By encouraging people to strive for good health, we can now help them to take measures to achieve it," she said. The state-of-the-art equipment was bought by the Friends of Bideford Medical Centre and is free to use."Many patients have very generously given the Friends of BMC donations and bequests, and it is through this goodwill that these state-of-the-art machines have been purchased," added Dr Lidder.
