DEVON County Council is preparing to mark International Darwin Day on February 12. The County Council has put together a new web page with information on Charles Darwin and his connections with Devon. Darwin has several links with the county, including setting sail from Plymouth on the HMS Beagle for his famous voyage to the Galapagos Islands in 1831. He also spent some time in Torquay visiting relatives and fellow scientists in 1861. The scientist was born on February 12,1809, and a number of events are taking place across the country as part of Darwin 200. The website http://www.devon.gov.uk/darwinindevon.htm provides details of the various Darwin inspired events around Devon throughout 2009.
