The ghostly apparitions are part of a performance project marking the presence 75 years ago of 10,000 American GIs, who came to North Devon to prepare for the D-Day landings of the Second World War. The project, devised by Multi Story Theatre, is part of Devon D-Day, a summer long programme of events commemorating the local contribution to the Normandy landings in 1944. At the weekend they were spotted in Bideford, Barnstaple, Instow and other coastal locations, staying in character and lounging around taking their ease in the sunshine. The passive performances were deliberately kept quiet, but we can reveal the figures will be out and about again this Sunday (May 19), so keep your eyes peeled. Bill Buffery of Multi Story Theatre said: "We're not telling anyone anything much about what's happening, but if anyone spots these mysterious figures while they're out and about in North Devon this weekend, we hope they'll share what they see using the special hashtag #OverHere." It is part of Devon D-Day, a host of events in North Devon this month and beyond - a free programme listing all of the events i is available from tourist information and visitor centres and museums.
