People are urged to avoid driving through Devon’s national parks due to ‘treacherous’ conditions.

Devon County Council is asking drivers to keep away from Dartmoor and Exmoor as it carries out its clear-up operation.

The council’s highways operations centre has described many roads in the moors as being ‘treacherous’ and ‘impassable’.

Ice and snow are still wide spread across the county after the ‘beast from the east’ touched down in the UK this week and the police are encouraging residents to only drive ‘if necessary’.

The council’s highways cabinet member, Cllr Stuart Hughes, said: “Please avoid driving today on routes across the National Parks.

“I would urge resident who live locally to please stay within your communities, we are working hard to restore access.

“Thawing snow and ice is widespread on many routes roads and our crews are clearing and treating the minor roads many of which are currently impassable.

“Driving in these conditions can be hazardous and any vehicles on the road will also hamper the clean-up operation and could delay the speed that we are able to clear these routes.”

The A399 is still closed at Blackmoor Gate and the police have issued a warning about the roads in Lynton area which are ‘still impassable’.
