A 55-year-old Bideford man has received a top award for his dedicated service as an instructor at the Exeter University Officer Training Corps. Sergeant John West was presented with the Lord Lieutenant's Certificate during a ceremony at County Hall, in Exeter.John was in the regular Army in the 1970s before transferring to the Territorial Army and the Royal Wessex Yeomanry in 1984. His service included stints in Gibraltar, Denmark, Germany and Northern Ireland.He is now retiring from the OTC after passing on a wealth of experience and knowledge to the young men and women of the unit. Others to receive the Lord Lieutenant's Certificate at the event included David Squire, 45, from Landkey, a lieutenant in the Army Cadet Force and commander of the South Molton detachment; Robert Gallagher, 30, an Army Cadet Force sergeant major instructor and commander of the Chulmleigh detachment; former Army regular Trevor Goaman, 47, from Torrington, now staff sergeant instructor with the Torrington detachment, ACF; and Michael Holland, 48, from Bideford, a staff sergeant instructor with the Bideford ACF detachment.www.northdevon.gov.uk
