As the UK continues to struggle under the mounting pressure of personal debt, Christians Against Poverty's specialist debt counselling centre in Barnstaple is today (Wednesday) celebrating its first anniversary and is already handling more than £200,000 of debt on behalf of its clients.Established in partnership with Freedom Church in response to the acute financial needs of people in North Devon, the dedicated CAP centre has since helped more than 35 people who were struggling to repay their debts.Using the award-winning charity's approach to sustainable and practical debt solutions, CAP centre manager Jeremy Westcott and his team of dedicated support workers have been able to combat the negative consequences of debt firsthand in the local community.Almost half the UK adult population has suffered extreme anxiety directly related to the effect of debt but residents of North Devon now have direct access to the support and advice necessary to get out of debt.Vera is just one of the people who has been helped by CAP Barnstaple, based at the Freedom Centre in Howard Avenue.Vera said: "Financially I was under a big black cloud, before I contacted CAP I didn't know where to start. To anyone who thinks they are beyond help, I would say please call CAP - they have offered me hope that there is a way out.
