Public service will be held in Barnstaple next week

The funeral of popular community champion Dave Butt will be held in Barnstaple next Friday (April 29).

A service of thanksgiving for the life of the former councillor, teacher and fundraiser will take place at Barnstaple Parish Church behind the High Street at 1.30pm, with all welcome to attend.

The family has asked for any donations to be split between Children's Hospice South West and Amigos, two charities Dave had worked tirelessly for.

He died suddenly at his Pilton home on Thursday, April 14 from what was understood to be a pulmonary embolism (blood clot).

He leaves his children Paul, Caroline and Amy, as well as two young granddaughters aged three years and one who is just 11 days old.

In a statement this week, his children said: "Everyone has spoken so highly of him, he was a much loved and popular man - we are so proud that he is our dad. He was selfless, generous and constantly putting others first.

"Dad approached life in a jovial way and was always either smiling or laughing. He always knew what to do and what to say."
