Combe Martin heating engineer plans to run 185 miles in seven days in support of Diabetes UK.

A Combe Martin heating engineer is planning to run seven marathons in seven days to raise money for Diabetes UK.

Dan Murdoch, 30, has been inspired to take on his extreme challenge by his brother-in-law Arthur Wharf’s experience of Type 1 diabetes.

He plans to run at least 26.2 miles every day for a week along the South West coast path, starting at St Agnes in Cornwall on Monday, June 23 and finishing in Woolacombe on Sunday, June 29.

He hopes the 185 mile run will raise £750 for Diabetes UK and his route will take him through Newquay, Padstow, Port Isaac, Bude, Instow, Barnstaple and Braunton.

On his final day he will join the runners taking part in the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Marathon in Woolacombe.

Type 1 diabetes involves taking daily injections of insulin to manage the condition. It is not known what causes Type 1 diabetes, but it can’t be prevented and is not related to being overweight. It is usually diagnosed in children or young adults.

Dan, of Murdoch and King Plumbing and Heating, is a regular runner with North Devon Road Runners and is expecting to run for between five and six hours a day.

“I can’t wait to get started on this next challenge that will take me along some of the most beautiful, but tough, parts of the country, with lots of climbs and descents,” he said.

“I have been training hard so that I will be ready. Knowing that I am running for Diabetes UK, which is such an important cause, will spur me on.”

His wife, Hannah, who will be supporting him throughout the week, added: “We are all so proud of Dan and have no doubts that he can complete this challenge. Having seen the impact that diabetes has had on Arthur, we are keen to raise all the money we can for research towards a cure.”

Diabetes Week runs until Sunday (June 14 and Dan and Hannah are organising a fundraising gig before he sets off with band Canyon Ride at The Dolphin Inn, Combe Martin, on Friday, June 20 from 7pm.
