A RECORD number have signed to saddle up for an Ilfracombe to Teignmouth cycle challenge in aid of North Devon Hospice. The Devon Coast to Coast Challenge started in 1999 with just four riders and has steadily grown. Entry for 2008 has already smashed last year's total of 93 participants."We've already got 100 riders signed up for this year's event and could have even more pledge their support by Sunday, June 8," said organiser and cycling bank manager, Simon Paddon."We're all really excited about this year's event - there are plenty of spaces still available but if you are planning to enter, I urge you to sign up online before the day to give us a good idea of numbers. "There are still some places available for coaches back to the start too, but you will need to get in quick." This year's challenge is among the North Devon Festival events. Organisers have even produced a race jersey featuring Devon's green and white flag.Riders will set off from Ilfracombe's Landmark Theatre and complete either 67 miles, or 92 miles. Both routes will meet at Libbaton Golf Course, North Tawton RFC and Bovey Tracey for food and comfort stops. From Bovey Tracey, they will be escorted to the finish in Teignmouth, where cyclists will be welcomed by carnival band Samba Sol.North Devon Hospice fundraiser, Emma Lowe, thrilled that the Challenge is supporting the hospice, said: "All proceeds will go towards supporting the hospice's vital work."Co-organiser Sean Ross added: "Above all, the event is about having fun and training reasonably hard to enjoy the competition on the day with a friendly edge; why not get a team together to support each other?"The event is open to anyone over the age of 16 with a bike.
