New cycle event invites riders to ditch the lycra and dress to impress this Saturday.

Cycle and converse in genteel style as the first ever Velo Vintage event comes to Barnstaple.

On Saturday, April 11 cyclists are invited to ditch the lycra and dress to impress with a social ride out setting off from Barnstaple's Heritage Centre.

Some will be riding vintage machines, penny farthings and tandems, but modern cycles are equally welcome As long as their riders are dressed splendidly.

There will be time to converse, enjoy the sights of the Tarka Trail, a public house and a cream tea as well as live music along the 10 mile route.

Organiser Alistair Cope has held six Velo Vintage events in East Devon and is keen to make them an annual event in Barnstaple too.

“We try to give everyone a good time but also to show the area off,” he said.

“We are not racing, this is about social cycling and we love older bikes. Just because it's old doesn't mean you can't use it, but if people have a brand new bike, that's fine, just dress up a little.

“Loosely we say the period from the 1920s to 50s, but we're very relaxed about it.”
