Haulier presented with town cup for dedication to local charities.

LOCAL haulage firm boss Bill Hockin has been honoured for his outstanding dedication towards charitable causes in the town.

Mr Hockin, who owns Rounsdwell-based William C Hockin Transport Ltd, was presented with the Barnstaple Town Cup by outgoing Mayor Councillor Ian Roome last night (Monday).

Mr Roome, who handed over the mayoral chains to Cllr Lesley Brown at the same ceremony, said Mr Hockin had provided trucks and trailers for the carnival for many years.

Also among the awards was Barnstaple Swimming Club, which was presented with the Kernow Cup for its work with hundreds of young people in the town.

Barnstaple Youth Council nominated Bratton Fleming teenager Sam Dunbavin for the Barnstaple Youth Cup.

Sam, 16, is heavily involved with a number of charities and has raised more than £2,000 for Amigos since visiting Uganda with the charity in 2010.

He is also a volleyball referee and was this month named Volleyball England's Young Official of the Year.

Standing down as Mayor, Mr Roome said he had enjoyed an 'extremely hectic' two-year term and paid tribute to the Mayoress, partner Linda Lewis.

He said: "Linda has been a great ambassador for Barnstaple. Her dedication and support in representing the town has been wonderful."

Mr Roome said the town council continued to be flexible in the face of increasing legislation passed down to its tier of government.

"The Localism Bill will give communities and local government greater powers and freedom from Whitehall, with many of the measures coming into effect this year.

"The practicalities of implementing this Act will be a challenge on the resources of our council and I am sure that robust systems will be embraced by our staff and councillors to make every aspect a positive one for Barnstaple."

Mr Roome also handed over a cheque for nearly £9,000 to lead cancer nurse Charlotte Overney for the Chemotherapy Appeal, his chosen charity for the year.

The amount boosted the total raised for local charities to £16,400 during the two years.
