A Bideford community centre is crowdfunding to install solar panels on its roof and help cut down on energy bills.

The Pollyfield Centre in East-the-Water is hoping to raise £11,250 to install the solar panels and help fight the rising utility costs to run the centre.

The centre was built in 1982 and is a bedrock in the East-the-Water community. It is hoped the panels would help to cut the centre’s bills by some £700 a year.

Bideford town councillor Joe Day is heading up the crowdfunding project, which has raised more than £900.

He said: “We’re also running against nine other projects to win one of two £5,000 prizes from the M&S Energy Fund.

“We’re hoping we might have a chance in the one for the most supporters.”
