A large crowd gathered for the opening of the new Barnstaple Poundworld store this morning (Thursday).

Despite the cold, the value retailer estimated around 100 people queued up waiting for the Boutport Street store's official opening at 10am.

The store was officially opened by the Mayor of Barnstaple, Councillor Julie Hunt, who cut a ribbon to let the shoppers through the doors.

Poundworld said the new shop had created 30 new retail jobs for Barnstaple.

The Barnstaple store in the former Store Twenty One unit is part of its expansion plan to open at 60 new locations in 2016.

Paul McKenzie, Poundworld area manager, said: "This morning's opening was a great success - it was fantastic to welcome local shoppers through our doors for the first time.

"We can't wait to help local people save money on their weekly shopping bill over the coming weeks and months."

On Saturday the store will be celebrating its first weekend of trading with free face painting.
