Founded by local doctor Simon Chappell (30) and his wife Becky (31), 'Vocal Accord' promises to put the fun back into choirs.

Simon said: "Singing is definitely having a revival at the moment. TV shows like Glee, Britain's Got Talent, and Gareth Malone's The Choir have proven that singing together in harmony doesn't have to be boring or stuffy and can actually be a lot of fun for everyone, young or old.

Vocal Accord will be a close-harmony group of around 20 people, who are up for singing a wide variety of music. As well as pop, jazz and contemporary numbers, we want to give a new lease of life to more traditional folksongs, madrigals and classical works. When people enjoy what they're singing, it really shows when you come to perform. It's about not taking yourself or the music too seriously".

"Some singers from my previous choirs will be coming to Barnstaple town centre on Saturday, October 30 afternoon to give a one-off outdoor performance, led by me," said Simon. "We'll be singing the type of music that I hope will feature in Vocal Accord's repertoire, so come along if you're interested in finding out more. You can log on to our website nearer the time to see where we'll be, and when."

Auditions for Vocal Accord are taking place in Pilton, Barnstaple, during the first week of November. "It's not going to be an X-Factor style grilling, we promise!" said Becky. "It would be great to see people in the 20-40 age bracket come forward, as I know many are put off by traditional choral societies. But anyone over 18 is welcome. It would be an advantage to be able to read music, but sight-reading is not essential - just plenty of enthusiasm!"

People interested in auditioning for Vocal Accord should contact Simon or Becky on (01271) 326454 or visit www.vocalaccord.co.uk for more information.
