A Westward Ho! woman narrowly avoided giving birth on the beach thanks to a kind stranger who drove her home in the nick of time.Briony Head was walking along Westward Ho! beach with her partner Jim Wiley, 41, on Monday when her waters broke nearly a mile away from the village. The 33-year-old told the Gazette: I was due to give birth on Tuesday, but on Monday I could feel something was happening. I didnt want to just sit around so Jim and I went for a walk on the beach. We walked to Sandymere from Westward Ho! and thought we could get there and back in time, but my contractions got really bad. Briony, a receptionist at Northam Medical Centre, said her contractions became so strong she couldnt move any further when a young man passing by offered to help. The man, who has since been identified by a Facebook appeal shared hundreds of times as Seth Hodorowski, stayed with the couple, giving Briony water and towels. We called for an ambulance, but an hour later it still hadnt arrived, said Briony. I couldnt move and really wanted to stay where I was but then my waters broke. When we called the ambulance service again they said they would dispatch one from Launceston, but I knew there wasnt time. Seth could have given up or left us to it, but he stayed with us the whole time. By this point the baby was well on her way, and Jim and Seth helped Briony into Seths car, driving her back to where their own car was parked on the slipway. We got through our front door and two contractions later our baby girl arrived, said Briony. Jim delivered her as our midwife had not arrived yet. We had planned to have a home birth anyway luckily we made it just in time. Their daughter, a sister to Evie, aged two, was born a healthy 7lbs 4oz, although the couple have not yet decided on her name. After the birth Briony posted about the experience in the Westward Ho! Community Group on Facebook, asking for help to find Seth and thank him. I couldnt believe how many times it was shared, and in the end we found him and we got to say thank you, she said. Weve said next time hes in Westward Ho! well have to buy him a pint.Click here to return to our homepage for more North Devon news.
