Two laybys between Barnstaple and Bideford will close today (Monday) after toilets closed last year.

Two lay-bys on the A39 between Barnstaple and Bideford will close permanently today (Monday).

The lay-bys at Rooks Bridge and Lydacott picnic areas have been closed by Devon County Council.

In June the Gazette reported how DCC was closing the toilets at the lay-bys as it tried to cut costs.

This also saw diner owner Rahim Jan evicted from his roadside spot.

In September, county councillor Robin Julian raised concerns the vacant lay-bys would 'attract the wrong attention'.

He told the Gazette at the time: "People are already fly-tipping here.

"Next there will be travellers moving in. We simply cannot have that with their children and dogs running around near this busy road; it's not safe."

It is not yet known if or when the lay-bys could be put up for sale on the open market.

A Devon County Council spokesman said: "Following the decision to dispose of these sites we are undertaking some works to restrict vehicle access.

"The sites are no longer being maintained and we have had some complaints about the potential for fly tipping."
