Bideford councillor angered as road is still closed off after landslide in November 2012.

A BIDEFORD councillor has criticised Devon County Council for a road which closed after a landslip that happened 13 months ago.

Chudleigh Fort in East-the-Water has been cordoned off since 20 tonnes of earth came crashing down on November 22, 2012.

At Bideford’s town council meeting on Thursday, Cllr Mervyn Landmead said he was concerned for two elderly residents living there.

He said: “I don’t think that landslide would have stayed there this long if it was anywhere else.

“There is a 91 and 93-year-old couple that struggle to get up there now.

“It is disgusting. That road was completely blocked for nearly nine months.”

Gaston Dezart, county councillor for Bideford East, said he would look into the matter.

A Devon County Council spokesman told the Gazette: “Discussions are on-going with the landowner but the aim is to start the embankment stabilisation project next March.”
