New allotments are to be created in Bickington thanks to 6,500 given by Devon County Council from funds allocated from the sale of Exeter International Airport. The money has been allocated by Fremington Rural County Councillor Rodney Cann from his local projects fund.Babbages Allotments will be created on an open space donated by North Devon District Council. The money will be used to put up chain link fencing, to make the site secure, and to prepare the land. The allotments will be administered and managed by Fremington Parish Council which has been trying to identify suitable sites for some time. Although there was overwhelming support for the allotments, a number of residents were concerned about vehicles parking near their homes. Steps will be taken to prevent this problem occurring and there will be no vehicular access to the site for allotment tenants.Councillor Cann said: "I am delighted at the response we have had to the proposals. Demand for the allotments is heavily over-subscribed with only 18 plots available. Sadly, some residents will be disappointed, but we will allocate the plots as fairly as possible." Fremington Parish Council said it was delighted that the allotment scheme was going ahead, thanks to the efforts of Councillor Cann. The Parish Council has had many requests for allotment provision and hopefully this site will be the first of many.
