Councillors to decide where travellors can pitch up in North Devon and Torridge. What do you think?
Councillors will meet to determine where travellers will be able to pitch up in northern Devon.
North Devon and Torridge district councils are currently working together on a joint Local Plan, which will shape how the area develops up to 2031.
As part of the plan, the councils must earmark a number of sites for travellers and gypsies.
A working group will be set up ‘very soon’, said chairman of joint working at North Devon Cllr Jeremy Yabsley.
He said: “We will be looking around North Devon for potential sites.
“We are going to have to talk to our travellers and land owners who might be prepared to allow sites on their land, plus the county council.”
Cllr Yabsley highlighted that sites at Seven Brethren in Barnstaple and the old cattle market in Bideford were already being used, but hadn’t been legally formalised.
“But they may not be appropriate as there are other aspirations for both sites, so we hope to start soon,” he said.
