Councillors have rejected a motion to bar any sale of land at Westward Ho! park.

A motion put forward by Councillors Peter Christie and David Brenton at Torridge District Council’s community and resources meeting last night (Monday), asked members to consider ‘not to sell any part of the Westward Ho! park area’.

It comes after a 4,000-strong petition was handed into TDC asking it not to develop the land, and to hand ownership to Northam Town Council to manage instead.

At the meeting, councillors voted against the motion (six votes to three, with one abstention) on the premise that if they hadn’t, it would have precluded the sale or transfer of the land to anyone, including Northam Town Council.

At an extraordinary full council meeting on October 1, councillors voted to defer the petition to save the park for a later community and resources meeting.

It is understood the petition is due to be discussed at the January 14 community and resources meeting.
