Councillors have agreed to sell two North Devon theatres. The move to sell the leasehold of the Queens Theatre in Barnstaple and the Landmark Theatre in Ilfracombe was agreed in principle at a North Devon Council executive meeting yesterday (Tuesday). The North Devon Theatres Trust has now offered to buy the leasehold from the council for £560,000, subject to agreeing the terms of the lease. The council currently leases the theatres to the trust, paying them a subsidy for the provision of leisure services. Richard Purchase, chairman of North Devon Theatres Trust, said a completion of the deal would be a win win situation for both the trust and the council. Those sentiments were echoed by executive member for leisure and culture, councillor Dick Jones. Cllr Jones said: If successful, it will mean [the trust] will have greater opportunity to access external funding and itll also mean the council hasnt got to subsidise the theatres beyond 2018, saving money for the council tax-payer. The Gazette revealed the trusts ambitions to buy the theatres in February. They made a formal offer to North Devon Council last month. The trust and the council will now work on detailed terms for the offer, which will then be considered at a future executive meeting.
