Council’s executive committee agrees to fund the resurfacing of public tennis courts by selling off Rock Park courts.
North Devon Council is looking at funding the resurfacing of public tennis courts in Rock Park – by selling off other courts nearby.
The council’s executive agreed at its meeting on Tuesday that the current Park Lane courts – and another plot of land between the two sets of courts – will be sold to raise £150,000.
Of that, £40,000 could be used for resurfacing of existing courts, adjacent to the bowling club.
The executive has asked for more information in a further report before agreeing to release the funds.

The other £110,000 will be added to the capital budget – and possibly ring-fenced to go towards building a new leisure centre in Barnstaple.
Under the terms of the proposal, the Park Lane Lawn Tennis Club will take over the maintenance of the refurbished courts, meaning the council would no longer have to pay any maintenance fees.

The meeting heard the land would be used for ‘gardens and extensions’ as they are in flood zone 3a and not classified as suitable for housing.
Cllr Dick Jones said it was an ‘opportunity to maximise the land’ which was otherwise of ‘no use’ to the council.
