Torridge District Council (TDC) will be going out to public consultation on its plans for new houses and car parking in Westward Ho!The council is looking to improve the existing village green and tennis courts site by the Happy Cafe, as well as creating space for much needed housing on the land. It has also agreed to acquire land at Wilkeys Field on the opposite side of Pebbleridge Road to the cricket ground to create a 100-space car park. Last year the Gazette reported how residents were mounting a campaign to save the green and tennis courts. At the time Mike Durkin, chairman of the WHos Park Campaign Group, told the Gazette: When the tide is high we see a lot of families here and children running with delight towards the sheltered play equipment its wonderful to watch. Most of the tennis courts are often full and its a big draw for visitors as well as locals. Sean Kearney, TDCs commercial and leisure services manager, said: The council has consulted local user groups and the Residents Association about what is the best future use of the tennis courts site on Golf Links Road. The importance of the space is widely recognised, but, equally, facilities are not that well used and there are no funds available for necessary refurbishments and improvement. The site offers the potential to provide improved facilities for the community, but the trade-off is that a proportion will need to be developed to raise funds for reinvestment. TDC has been working since 2004 on its regeneration project for Westward Ho!A public consultation will be held at the Happy Cafe on July 1, 11am-3pm.Click here to return to our website for more North Devon news.
