BIDEFORD Town Council is seeking a meeting with Torridge District Council and Tesco to discuss its call for a bigger community contribution from the supermarket in respect of permission to build a new store at East-the-Water. The district council has already granted planning permission for a store in Mondeo Way, bringing the prospect of 180 new jobs.It has been agreed that Tesco will give £10,000 to East-the-Water Youth Association and £30,000 towards road safety improvements. But the town council believes the community deserves more.An approach to the Government Office for the South West has brought no joy.A GOSW officer has replied that the Secretary of State's general approach is not to interfere with the jurisdiction of local planning authorities unless it is necessary to do so as they are normally best placed to make decisions relating to their areas. Now the town council is to ask Torridge District Council if it will set up a meeting.
