NORTH Devon Council has won accredited employer status from two professional financial organisations - the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) and Chartered Institute of Public Finance & Accountancy (CIPFA). The accreditations recognise that the council has a planned and positive approach to staff training and professional development. Nine members of staff are currently members of AAT or CIPFA. To maintain their membership they have to undertake regular training throughout the year, to ensure that they are up to speed with current best practice. Working for an accredited employer means that staff can meet these requirements by following the council's training and development processes. In order to achieve the accreditations the council has to have in place an effective staff development scheme and be recognised as an Investor in People employer.Leader and Portfolio holder for Resources Councillor Mike Harrison said: "The council is very proud to receive accreditation from these two highly respected financial institutions. We recognise how important it is to invest in our staff and to have a highly skilled workforce who feel valued by their employer."Chartered accountant Mike Mansell, the Executive Director for Operations and Finance, said: "Receiving the accreditation is a recognition of the hard work that has gone into the training and development programme. This allows us to reduce duplication where the professional and in-house development needs overlap. We will also receive the support and recognition our staff deserve from the AAT and CIPFA." The AAT is the leading professional body for accounting technicians and CIPFA is the only accountancy body specialising in the public sector, with responsibility for setting standards in accountancy for local government.www.northdevon.gov.uk
