Council protests at traffic lights plan

BIDEFORD Town Council is to write to Devon County Council strongly opposing its decision to introduce a traffic signal layout at the Westleigh Junction.

In opposing the scheme, town council members said it would not be of any economic benefit to the town or assist with road safety.

The town council is also of the opinion that the whole consultation process was flawed and that the county council had not listened to the issues that both Bideford and Northam Town Councils raised at a joint meeting with them in early March.

Both the town councils are adamant that there needs to be a roundabout at the junction and not traffic lights as they are concerned that traffic lights could lead to a backup of traffic on to the Torridge Bridge and up to the Heywood Road roundabout, causing traffic chaos.

Bideford is also writing to Torridge and West Devon MP, Geoffrey Cox, on the matter.
