Councillors vote to dispose of land at Newton Road, which may be redeveloped into ‘more affordable’ homes.
Torridge district councillors have voted to offer land at Newton Road in Bideford ‘for disposal’ to Westward Housing.
The council will offer land next to numbers six-25 Newton Road to the housing association for £18,500, as agreed by its community and resources committee.
A spokesman for Westward Housing said: “We continuously review our housing stock to check it is fit for purpose and sometimes need to look at improving or redeveloping property depending on its age, construction and maintenance costs.
“At this site of some properties on Newton Road, we carefully assessed our options to update or redevelop.
“The conclusion was that we can make better use of the land if we redevelop it into new housing.”
The spokesman confirmed Westward Housing was discussing the possibilities for the site with planners but no decisions had been made.
He added: “We have also been working with the residents living there about their options if we were to gain permission to redevelop, which has not yet been decided.”
The new properties would be ‘more affordable’ and would be a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom flats and houses.
