Boxing equipment, coaching courses and even a new t-shirt press are some of many projects that will benefit from funding.
A COUNCIL has awarded £15,000 in grants to local youth groups as part of a new budget launched in May to support young people aged 10-19 years.
Torridge District Council’s community and resources committee voted on Monday to approve the grants to seven youth organisations, and urge others to apply for the next round of funding.
Among those receiving funding were Devon Youth Service in Holsworthy which received £3,000 for a kitchen refurbishment, and Torrington Police Amateur Boxing Club who received £3,000 to assist with the purchase of start up equipment.
Devon Youth Service in Bideford received £3,000 to fund a range of music equipment to assist with recording and performance activities, and Young Devon were awarded £1,700 to buy equipment to start up a t-shirt and promotions printing press to
Bideford Cricket Club will be able to fund autumn and winter colts’ coaching courses with an £810 grant and Great Torrington Adventure Training received £500 to support expedition costs towards Duke of Edinburgh awards.
Bideford AFC Youth Development also received £3,000 to assist with expenses associated with setting up two new youth teams and to support the growing youth development project within the club.
Councillor Michael Footitt, instigator of the Youth Initiatives Budget said: “This is a great initiative aimed at helping young people in Torridge and we look forward to seeing some of the benefits of the grants in the very near future.
“In this first round we’ve awarded more than £15,000 to local groups which means we still have another £15,000 available for further applications.
“I urge youth groups or even individuals interested in applying for funding to get in touch with the council sooner rather than later.”
Funding of up to £3,000 is available for each application for a variety of youth projects including training, community or sports events or help with offering a voluntary service.
The funding could also be put towards the purchase of new equipment for a youth club or the costs of attending a youth club or related activity.
