Devon County Council has approved proposals for a new footbridge over the North Devon Link Road at Roundswell. Today (Wednesday) councillors at its cabinet meeting voted to approve the £2.85million project aimed at boosting the infrastructure of a growing part of Barnstaple and the A361/A39. Fremington rural County Councillor Frank Biederman has welcomed the decision: This proposal is a key part of delivering a safe and sustainable walking and cycling link to this site, he said. A bridge was considered more appropriate than a crossing given the likely impact on traffic on the A39 and the 60mph speed limit. Funding for the bridge will include £2m from the Governments Growth Deal scheme. Mr Biederman added: This is an exiting investment of money secured from outside funding to bring higher paid employment, a park and ride scheme, as well as linking to the villages on the south side of the A39, that will hopefully help mitigate the likely impact of future development in the area. I do have concerns at the cost, but pleased that it is being built in away to be able to add extra lanes to the A39 in the future.Click here to return to our homepage for more North Devon news.
