Construction company Morgan Sindall will begin work on the new unit at North Devon District Hospital next year.
THE construction company who will be building North Devon’s brand new chemotherapy and day treatment unit has been announced.
Morgan Sindall will begin work on the unit at North Devon District Hospital (NDDH) early next year as the appeal reaches its £1.86million mark.
Earlier this month the Gazette revealed how Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust had approved the final business case and design plans for the project.
Chris Spear, area director for Morgan Sindall, said: “Patients come to NDDH for treatment during a difficult time in their lives and anything which could make them more comfortable, provide more privacy, a shorter travel time and more space to sit with their families will make a huge difference to their overall wellbeing.
“The trust has been inspirational in its tireless fundraising for this new facility and we are delighted to have been chosen to deliver this special scheme.
“Morgan Sindall is well versed in healthcare construction projects and the challenges which go with working in a live environment.
“We always try and immerse ourselves in the communities in which we build and will be looking to appoint a number of local subcontractors to work with throughout the lifetime of this project.”
The building, which will be linked to the western side of the main hospital building, will have its own drop-off point, reception and waiting area, consulting rooms for haematology and oncology outpatients, two open-plan rooms for chemotherapy and other treatment, plus two en-suite treatment rooms.
Ian Roome, fundraising manager, said the building work may be about to begin but funds were still needed to reach the £2.2million total.
“It is very exciting that it is really happening now, but we need people to continue to fundraise and get involved,” he said.
