THE public is to be consulted on plans to put a gipsy and traveller site at Derriton, near Holsworthy.Torridge District Council is to hold a pre-planning consultation event at Holsworthy Memorial Hall on Wednesday of next week from 1.30pm to 7pm.Torridge is required by The Housing Act of 2004 to provide 24 pitches for gipsies and travellers across the district.The former Devon County Council highways depot at Derriton has been identified as being capable of accommodating between six and eight pitches.Torridge District Council's policy, performance and resources committee has given approval to proceed with the submission of a planning application in association with Tarka Housing.Nigel Barnard, Tarka Housing managing director, said: "Tarka is supporting the submission of the planning application because there is a need for properly managed sites and the planning process will decide if this is the right site."There is no cost to any Tarka tenants in our submitting this application."The scheme's appointed architects will attend the public consultation to display their initial designs and they will be available to answer questions.More information can be found at www.torridge.gov.uk where there is also an opportunity for public feedback.
