SIR - I was interested to see Mr Clarke's letter in last week's Gazette. The concept of courtesy from prospective employers is noted!

As a firm, we have always believed it was important to acknowledge applications for jobs (whether or not advertised) - whilst yes, there is work involved, that applicant could be a prospective customer and indeed, could speak to many people. A simple courteous acknowledgement even if declining the opportunity, says something about the ethics of the firm generally, as well as remembering that its customers are out there in the public domain!
