PEOPLE at Gorwell in Barnstaple are to be asked what they want on their estate with a proposed new development project. North Devon Council and North Devon Homes are seeking to join forces to pool seven separate plots of land to create new affordable homes but also community facilities. As well as up to 50 new homes, on separate sites around the estate, a new community building plus improved public open space is suggested. The council says it wants to enhance the quality of life for people on the estate and they will be at the heart of any decisions made. The scheme was back before the councils executive committee on Tuesday, when members agreed to allow for disposal of land at less than market value, as well as to apply to the government to sell land at a lower rate for purposes other than rented housing, if required by the project. Its about looking at the land held between the two, seeing what the community wants and using those assets to try and deliver that, said Barbara Venn, corporate development manager for the council. At this point no decisions have been made. The aim is to get an in principle agreement and then North Devon Homes can go ahead with consultation to see what people would like and what aspirations they have. She said rather than a village hall consultation it was likely a community event, such as a barbecue, would be organised towards the end of July.
