VOLUNTEERS from Bideford’s Asda store have given an area of the town a makeover.

As part of a national campaign, the staff were asked by Torridge District Council to help clean up the Old Town play area.

Peter Wilcox, Asda community life champion, said: “We concentrated on the two worst affected areas: the wall overlooking the road and the boundary wall of the cemetery, where we encountered possibly decades of overgrowth.

“We managed to expose the headstones that had been hidden underneath and Torridge District Council helped by taking away three truck loads of vegetation.

“We hope the work done assists those who are researching their family history and for the people who use the park to enjoy too.”
