SIR - I wish to respond to David Luggar's letter of May 13. He states: "Local elections will be fought on a range of issues to which the extremists have no answers."What are they going to do to keep the council tax down? What is their policy to provide better care for elderly people? What do they have to say about school discipline and education? What are they going to do to help people through the current recession? What is their policy on hospitals? How are they going to improve our roads and pavements?"These would be reasonable questions if asked by anyone other than a card carrying member of the Conservative Party. It was Edward Heath's Conservative Government which took us into the Common Market and Conservatives have supported every one of the treaties which took decision making away from the House of Commons and gave it to the unelected European Commission. It was Margaret Thatcher's Government that took controls off the banking system leading to the chaos we see today. However these questions need answering. How to keep council taxes down? Without going into the whole question of local government finance our party would not be paying huge consultancy fees used for the sake of big business. The consultancy fee for the proposed development at Seven Brethren Bank was 600,000.On care for pensioners we would get the privateers out. The public service ethic would replace the profit motive and we would also get the pension right. Our candidate for the Barnstaple North ward has argued for the return of free bus passes to carers. On education and school discipline we would be guided by the teaching unions. Again we would kick the privateers out. We would probably use the Cuban model. Specifically, our candidate has highlighted the fact that in spending per pupil Devon County Council is one of the meanest. He asks what we are going to do to help people through the recession. Gordon Brown boasted that he had got rid of boom and slump. He got it half right. Slumps are inevitable in capitalism. However Luggar's final question provides a little of the answer. Why not directly employ people to repair the roads and pavements? Indeed now is the time to increase the spending power of the mass of the people rather than the bankers. Billions have been paid for the system's gambling debts. At least 78 billion is proposed for Trident replacement. As a nation we spend on unpopular wars. We slop oodles of cash into the European Union. We waste money that could be properly used. Our policy on hospitals should be decided in consultation with the health service unions. Everyone working in a hospital should be directly employed as a health service worker. Privateers like Sodexho should be booted out.We Communists are urging people living in Barnstaple North to vote for our candidate Paul Dyer and to vote No2EU - Yes to Democracy in the Euro elections and to watch our broadcast on May 26.Gerrard Sables, Election agent,Communist Party of Britain
