A climber was airlifted to hospital from Lundy Island on Saturday afternoon after falling from a cliff and badly breaking his leg.

The island Coastguard Rescue Team was soon at the scene and they discovered the man had lost a lot of blood, so Swansea Coastguard wasted no time in calling out the RAF search and rescue helicopter from Chivenor.

The team on the ground prepared a landing site and the man was airlifted from an area north-west of the old lighthouse and taken back to the mainland, before being transported by ambulance to North Devon District Hospital.

Steve Jones, Swansea Coastguard Watch Manager, said the call had come in at 2.45pm from the climber's concerned colleague and they were able to despatch the rescue helicopter to him quickly.
