Sealed Knot re-enactment to take place in the town this Saturday.
THE English Civil War returns to Barnstaple on Saturday to mark the 366th anniversary of the town’s surrender.
For the first time a group from the Sealed Knot re-enactment society will be staging an event in the town, with a variety of costumed characters outside Barnstaple Heritage Centre on the Strand from 11am until 1.30pm.
To commemorate the Siege of Barnstaple, the Mayor will have the terms of surrender read to him by the victorious Parliamentarian troops of Harrison’s Company, Sergeant-Major General Philip Skippon’s Regiment of Foote.
A volley or two of musket fire is expected and the living history group will be on hand and in character throughout the event.
Staff from the Heritage Centre will be in full period costume and the centre has added to its Civil War display, as well as produced several publications about Barnstaple’s role during the conflict and the leading figures involved.
