STREET Pastors could be coming to Bideford and across North Devon.Christians Together in Bideford and District hopes to set up the scheme, to engage with, befriend and support people on the town's streets at night, normally at weekends. This follows an initial venture last New Year's Eve, when 30 volunteers from local churches went out among the revellers to provide helping hands and listening ears for those in distress. Now it is hoped to set up a formal Street Pastors group.Street Pastors already operate in many towns and cities nationwide, engaging with people, particularly the young, who may feel excluded and marginalised. The nationwide scheme was set up by the Ascension Trust and its national project manager Roger Reid will be the speaker at the Christians Together annual meeting at Bideford Baptist Church next Wednesday evening (June 11).Duncan Withall, chairman of Christians Together in Bideford and District, said: "These are volunteers out on the streets, not officials. They are people with concern for their society, particularly the young, and are available to befriend and help." For more information call (01237) 475755.
